California ports backlog

Week 45 saw a record 111 container vessels at anchor, prior to the Covid Pandemic the record had been 17 ships waiting to berth. The previous record of 108 vessels was reported on 21st October this year. A fine system will be implemented on the 15-Nov to try and alleviate the congested ports, shipping lines will be fined 100 USD per container per day for every container left at the port more than three days – if the next move is by rail, or more than nine days if the next move is by truck. The fines are unlikely to improve the situation because there are issues with warehouse, trucking and labour which impact the ability to move these containers faster. According to a report from American Shipper, there were over 60,000 containers on the ports that had been there for more than nine days.
